Just started my second part-time job as a student few days ago. Found this job on Gumtree.
Didn't expected that they actually replied me and gave me an interview cause I know I denfinetly cannot talk and listen like an Australian. so, I am not surprised that this shop is ownd by an Asian couple because I know that Australian restuarant won't take a risk to hire an Asian who was not grew up in Australia.
Most of the jobs will say "very good English" or "must be fluent in English". I am confident with my English between Asian but is way too far to say I can speaking English fluently. No. Definitely not OTL
#Another story: Actually, there is another Australian owed cafe replied and asked me can I start to work as a sandwich hand when I was just started in Uni but I was too dump that I say my school timetable hasn't release yet so I didnt know that would I be available on every morning, and then I just lost that chance. Stupid me didn't know that I can choose my own timetable = =)
The owner who hired me said the reason why she wanna hire me because I want a long term part time job and I am good looking lol Well ... thank you but mostly they need people working in summer time and they just have 2 people left so they need someone to replace them.
Anyway, even though I am confident with my English in certain way and I just found out that sometimes I still cannot catch up and remember the order, cause I am not familiar with western food and how to wrap a sandwich. Today was my second day to training in the shop, getting better than the first day but still messed up a few times because of lack of experience and language problem lol. No wonder why local resturants don't hire people who is not a native speaker.
Hopefully will getting better on my third day.
But I do like this job. I have never work in a customer service area in Australia and I am so glad that this Asian couple hire me even though they are not really paying the minimum wages (~20 cent per hour different), I am still happy to work in this sandwich shop.
The workers in shop are all aisan but people are come from different countries I guess, anyway, we all speak English in the shop, no one is communicating in Mandarin or something, just English! which is really good! When I was a backpacker, I can only talk to people who english is not better than me. Finally, I can talk to some people that has a similar level as me or even better than me! I can learn from them! I don't have to be afraid to practise my English because they are Asian. Awesome.
The most important is I will have experience in retail. I know maybe is nothing to do with my major in study. Yah, speaking of which, I still need to find another way to figure it out how to find a job in my study field. Sigh .... is gonna be hard.
Hope everything will be going well, then this will be my student part time job for maybe at least a year.
